Firefly Bad Company #1 - when I was over at the Distinguished Competition, I came up with the idea for a Serenity variant cover by Joe Quinones. My original vision was of Mal with Saffron, the recurring character portrayed by a then relatively unknown Christina Hendricks, five years before she would win the hearts and minds of the world as Joan Holloway on Mad Men. Joe seemed like the perfect fit after seeing him draw another curvaceous redhead, the Inhumans’ Medusa, during a fill-in issue of Matt Fraction’s FF, the editor Scott Allie liked the idea, Zack Whedon was cool with it. But Joss wasn’t, mainly because Saffron wasn’t featured anywhere in the coinciding story. I wasn’t even mad, cause I couldn’t get over the shock that something I suggested had been presented and considered by THE Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dollhouse, the writer of Astonishing X-Men, and the director of Avengers! Long story short, we swapped Saffron for Inara, it was still the most successful variant cover I had been a part of up until our Batman #50 Josh Middleton exclusive last summer, and now Saffron is getting her own mini series! If you like the old cover, we’ve still got some available over here!
