Ssalefish GSO First Look #320 for 6.21.23

Last Thursday it was announced that this past week’s release of Void Rivals by Robert Kirkman & Lorenzo de Felici and their promise of a new shared universe at Image Comics is actually the start of their publishing plan for Transformers & G.I. Joe at their new publishing home. Even more exciting for me personally is that Daniel Warren Johnson (Extremity, Do A Powerbomb, Murder Falcon, Beta Ray Bill, Wonder Woman Dead Earth) will be writing the More than Meets the Eye title starting in October!

It feels awesome to be so pumped for a new title after reading constantly for the last 20 years, that while sometimes it seems like you’ve seen it all, comics still finds a way to surprise you. Pretty excited about Ultimate Invasion next week by Jonathan Hickman & Bryan Hitch, but more on that below!

The following titles are scheduled to ship on Wednesday, June 21st (Tuesday, June 20th for DC) excluding some re-orders and providing nothing changes by the time the final invoice arrives on Monday:

  • Ultimate Invasion #1 - back in college in 2004, when I was reintroduced by comics by Bobby Williams on the 2nd floor of Mary Foust on UNCG’s campus, it was Powers, Y the Last Man, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimate Spider-Man, and the Ultimates that got me hooked. When the MCU started, you heard a lot about Joe Quesada, Mark Millar, and Brian Michael Bendis as the guys in the room, but Bryan Hitch’s contributions on art in Ultimates and the Authority can’t be understated for presenting the widescreen potential of comics (and casting Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury). Also, the last time I was all-in on a summer event was 2015’s Secret Wars, also written by Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four, FF, House of X, Powers of X, X-Men, Ultimate Comics Ultimates). Needless to say, I’ve got a lot riding on this one, paying off over a decade of development for Ultimate Reed Richards, a.k.a. The Maker!
